10 Buckler, Benjamin STEMMATA CHICHELEANA; OR, A GENEALOGICAL ACCOUNT OF SOME OF THE FAMILIES DERIVED FROM THOMAS CHICHELE, OF HIGHAM-FERRERS IN THE COUNTY OF NORTHAMPTON; ALL OF WHOSE DESCENDANTS ARE HELD TO BE ENTITLED TO FELLOWSHIPS IN ALL SOULS COLLEGE, OXFORD; BY VIRTUE Of Their Consanguinity to Arch-Bishop CHICHELE, the Founder. A Supplement to the Stemmata Chicheleana; Containing Corrections, and Very Large Additions to the Tables of Descents from Thomas Chichele of Higham-Ferrers in the County of Northampton
Oxford At the Clarendon Press 1765, 1775 First Edition Hardcover Poor
Binding copy. Quarter-leather binding, worn. Front cover detached. Rear cover hinge broken. Spine is split down the middle. There is a burn mark and accompanying vertical chip affecting the top margins of the considerable number of preliminary pages and first five pages of text. On the title page, for instance, the chip measures 3" across the top right corner, and is about 3/4" deep. The paper is singed about an half-inch around the periphery of the chip. This flaw does not affect text on any of these pages, but is unattractive. Additionally, bound into this volume is the 160-page supplement Oxford: At the Clarendon Press, 1775. Several owners' names on endpapers, including the bookplate of Clement Taylor Smythe. Bookplate has a red wax seal at the top. Former owner (s) have made some marks to text, including additions and corrections, as well as the insertion of actual additional pages. There are two blank leaves between pages 4 and 5 in the first volume, others are filled in with writing. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; xiv, 156, [10]; xiii, 15-160 [8] pages; Thomas Chichele was Archbishop of Canterbury in the early 15th century, in which capacity he founded All Souls College at Oxford University. As part of the statutes he declared that anyone who could show a descent from his father, Thomas Chichele of Higham Ferrers, NTH, wasentitled to preference when it came to election to Fellowship of the College. It appears that Clement Taylor Smythe, who, according to his obituary in an 1852 number of The Gentleman's Magazine, was "a gentleman eminent as a genealogist and antiquary"; is the principal author of the additional updates in the text, including scattered pencil notations throughoutt. More notable updates are: annotations in ink and pencil on page 5, annotations in pencil to page 88 followed by the insertation of two leaves between page 88 and 89; the first leaf completely filled out on the page facing page 88 with a continuation of No 153 in ink and pencil, with more in pencil on the verso. The first page has Clement Taylor Smythe as part of the tree, near the bottom, with the notation in pencil "living 1838". Following the index of the supplement is an additional page for No 528, completely hand written in ink, with a bit of 529 on the verso. 52487
